Course Description

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

This course is an excellent introduction to any health/medical occupation.

Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics care for the sick or injured in emergency medical settings. People’s lives often depend on their quick reaction and competent care. EMTs and paramedics respond to emergency calls, performing medical services and transporting patients to medical facilities. 

This course prepares students to function as an EMT, and to administer Basic Life Support. The student will be trained in many skills including assessing patients medical needs, bandaging, using splinting and immobilizing procedures and administering first aid. The student will also assist with allowed medications, train how to lift and transport patients along with work as a member of a medical team. The student will be able to stabilize a patient’s airway, learning and use correct medical terminology, operate an automated external defibrillator and know proper terms with anatomy and physiology. Students will learn to assist patients in childbirth, as well as measure and monitor vital signs. Participation in the HOSA youth organization will be an integral part of this course.
