Welding Technician Introduction

Program Overview:

This introductory course in welding provides students with
hands-on experience in fundamental welding skills and techniques. Students will be introduced
to the four primary welding processes—GMAW, SMAW, GTAW, and FCAW—as well as cutting
methods including oxy-fuel, plasma, and mechanical cutting. They’ll also explore various career
paths in the welding industry to help them assess whether welding might be a career they wish
to pursue. For those interested, this course will prepare them for further study in the Advanced
Welding class. Alongside technical skills, employability skills such as punctuality, consistent
attendance, teamwork, and strict adherence to safety protocols are emphasized throughout the
course and critical to be successful.

SLCC – WLD 1005 Entry Welding Technician: This is an entry level course that will teach
basic welding skills. This course will prepare students to apply technical knowledge and skills in
the workplace and in project construction. SMAW and GMAW welding will be the main welding
processes covered in this portion of the class

Additional Details:

Course Length: 1 Semester (A day OR B day, for 2 class
periods) 

High School Credit: 1 CTE or Elective Credit 

Concurrent Enrollment: 3 college credits. Student is
responsible to register and pay for concurrent enrollment classes
at SLCC. For more information on these classes, see Appendix. 

Skills Certification: Utah Entry Level Welder State Skill Test 

Recommended: Any student who enjoys working and learning
in a hands-on environment. No prior welding experience required.

Class Focus: Safety, introduction to welding fundamentals. This
is an exploratory course.
Fees & Equipment: Estimated at $100 required fee + safe work
clothes and boots.
