Course Description
This semester-long program is available to juniors and seniors. Students have to be 16 years old to take this class. This course provides an excellent introduction to the health care field and the role of a nursing assistant. Students will learn the skills needed to work as a nursing assistant and will prepare to become certified through the Utah nursing Assistant Registry. Certification is a required prerequisite for most nursing programs in the state of Utah. This class provides a wonderful foundation for any student considering a future in medicine.
Program Expectations
Students are expected to have excellent attendance and are required to attend one clinical session each week at a long-term care facility – must be able to provide their own transportation. The curriculum is college level reading and a minimum 2.5 GPA is recommended for program entry. Students are required to provide immunization records, pass random drug testing and a background check in order to remain in the program.

Additional Details:
High School Credit: CTE credit or elective credit: up to 2 credits
Concurrent Enrollment: 5 college credits. Student is responsible to
register and pay for concurrent enrollment classes at SLCC. For more
information on these classes, see Appendix.
Industry Certification: Students prepare to take the State Nurse
Assistant Certification Test.
Skills Certification: Utah State Skill Certification Test(s)
Additional Opportunities: Students may experience youth
leadership and service through HOSA.
Requirements: Excellent attendance, students must attend one
clinical session each week, above and beyond class time. Must have
current immunizations: Hepatitis B series, Tuberculosis (TB) skin test,
Tdap, Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR), Flu, and Varicella.
Students must pass a urine drug screening.
Recommended: Biology, Health Occupations, Medical Anatomy and
Physiology, and Health Science.
